Google’s YouTube To Offer Subscription Streaming Service?

The movie streaming business seems to be getting more crowded by the day.

Where once Netflix stood alone, the choices for consumers interested in subscription-based streaming of movies and TV shows are expanding. Amazon.com recently launched free streaming for subscribers to its Amazon Prime service. And now Google’s YouTube unit apparently wants to get into the game.

According to the New York Post, YouTube is “eager” to offer a streaming service of its own, and is considering launching first overseas where there is less competition. The Post says the company has been in talks with Hollywood studios for “months,” and that it plans to launch first in Europe, and in particular in the U.K. Note that Amazon recently bought LoveFilm, a European-based online video retailer that offers streaming videos and games in the U.K. and a number of other European countries. Netflix so far operates only in the U.S. and Canada.

The story quotes one “Hollywood executive” as saying Google plans to spend $100 million to secure content for the new service. The project is reportedly headed by former Netflix exec Robert Kyncl.
