Jack White and Adele could be blacklisted from the service entirely

    by Ben Popper - June 17, 2014

-- As YouTube prepares to roll out an ad-free streaming music service, it will block videos from indie artists who don't sign up for the new offering, as originally reported by Financial Times. YouTube has signed deals with the major labels, and is explicitly threatening to block artists from using the entire YouTube platform - free or paid - if they do not agree to the terms of the new streaming service.

The FT quotes Robert Kyncl, YouTube's head of content and business operations, confirming that the service plans to block videos from any artists or labels who have not signed on to its new paid service, "to ensure that all content on the platform is governed by its new contractual terms."

Report: YouTube Music Key is Google’s upcoming subscription service w/ concerts, remixes, free Play Music Key | 9to5Google (click for full article)

    by Chance Miller - August 18, 2014

-- We’ve been hearing rumors of a YouTube streaming music service for quite a while, but now Android Police has published a report detailing Google’s streaming music plans. The report claims that Google will soon launch a new service called YouTube Music Key, as well as rebrand Google Play Music All Access to Google Play Music Key.

The report goes on to claim that YouTube Music Key will offer ad-free music, offline playback, and audio-only streaming. The last of those will be crucial for background and screen-off listening. YouTube Music Key will allegedly offer a 30-day free trial, after which you’ll be charged $9.99 a month for the service. That $9.99 fee includes access to Play Music Key, as well. Google has added “over 20 million high-quality tracks – complete albums, organized into artist discographies” specifically for Music Key.
