I like this idea. This strategy will help influence the television industry and related markets to move towards connected TVs. This is not just about having a device with lower power requirements and reduce clutter, but this would help the TV Everywhere movement to go in the right direction.

I understand Verizon announced their IPTV app will be included in the new Samsung and LG Smart TV's. Any idea if this might also result in a google tv app as well? Will the Samsung and LG Smart TV sets be a flavor of google tv or are these competing standards? I am considering FIOS TV as I have FIOS internet already and this looks like a good fit for remote viewing of FIOS TV content.

No, clue. You're going to have to contact the developer (android-support@core.verizon.com) for more information.

They are separate standards but they don't have to be exclusive. So, it depends on how each manufacturer decides to implement them in their products.
