Just bought an Asus VS238H-P 23" LED LCD Monitor to use on my desk workstation and to use it to with my Chromecast dongle. I works great. This particular monitor has no internal speakers but instead gives you a 3.5 audio output jack. I ran the sound to my bookshelf stereo sound system but you can run it to a nice amplified speaker system.

I tested the dongle into the DVI port using a HDMI to DVI adapter and the video does pass thru. Of coarse you will not get audio because DVI has no audio support.

I also tested the dongle out in my living room by plugging it into my HDMI receiver to see if I can just receiver audio. It worked that way too. So I can turn off the TV/monitor and still get audio out of my receiver.
