I tested tab casting using a laptop with an Intel i7 chip. The quality is quite good. I thought it would require more power than an i7.

I am not sure what is available with more power than the best Intel i7 chips. I just tried my Alienware laptop with Intel Core i7 740QM Processor, an older chip and casting Hulu resulted in terrible quality, not usable at all. The same laptop using PlayOn with Google TV plays Hulu well.

What i7 chip do you have and have you tried Hulu?

I am using Windows Security Essentials, turned that off and that made no difference, at least nothing I noticed. Video stutters with Chromecast but plays smoothly with PlayOn/Google TV.

    It's a Sony VAIO T Series Ultrabook SVT15115CXS, 3rd Gen Intel Core i7-3537U processor.

    I didn't try Hulu. I tried a hockey game.

OK, that is a better chip than I use for this purpose. If you get a chance, try Hulu just to see if that incremental improvement in processing power makes a difference.

I had read that the Chromecast tab casting is supposed to be much improved with the upcoming Chrome 30 release to the stable channel. Chrome 30 is still in beta - but as Revue5 suggested you might want to give it a try.

If I can figure out how to update to Chrome 30 beta, I will try that. I assume that is easy but I haven't tried yet.

Just download & install it, (that over rides the current version) - launch it & from “About Google Chrome” check version# & update (31 …).

You may also need to reduce video projection quality to “Standard 480p"
