Now Samsung has unveiled a Tizen software developer kit for televisions. The goal is to get developers to create third-party apps that can run on Samsung smart TVs.

Samsung Z is the first Tizen smartphone - Liliputing (click for full article)

    by Brad Linder - June 2, 2014

-- Samsung sells more Android-powered smartphones than any other company - but Samsung has been investing heavily in Tizen, a Linux-based alternative to Android. Samsung already offers smartwatches and cameras powered by Tizen, and the company appears to be gearing up to offer a Tizen smart TV soon.

Now Samsung is getting ready to launch its first Tizen smartphone. The Samsung Z is a 4.8 inch phone with a 2.3 GHz quad-core processor and a 720p display. And it looks an awful lot like Samsung's Android phones... it just doesn't run Android apps.

Samsung Reveals Tizen-based Smart TV…Commercial Launch Likely Next Year

-- SEOUL, Sept. 17 (Korea Bizwire) — Samsung Electronics has unveiled a smart TV embedded with Tizen, the operating system developed jointly with Intel. It plans to make available the application programming interface (API) next year in order for external developers to develop smart TV apps. The company will also launch a smart TV model applied with Tizen in the upcoming CES trade show to be held in Las Vegas early next year.

In the Samsung Open Source Conference, or SOSCON, held at the Grand InterContinental in Seoul’s Gangnam on September 16, the company showcased the 65-inch smart TV embedded with Tizen.

A Samsung official said in one of the presentations that the company would reveal the API source code for Tizen operating system next year. This is the first time for the company to disclose the real-life model of the TV that uses Tizen as an operating system, with a fixed app development schedule.

Given the nature of the smart TV that requires a variety of apps, the actual date of sale for the TV would be months after the disclose of the API, which means that the commercial launch of the Tizen-based smart TV would be some time next year.

On the day’s event, more than 700 participants gathered. Lee Hyo-gun, head of Samsung Electronics’ software center which sponsored the developers event, said, “We are glad that so many developers showed keen interest in our event, the first of its kind in Korea.”

** A Samsung Electronics official explained, “Thanks to the light programming overhead, the speed of Tizen TV is faster than existing smart TVs. Tizen TV also provides users with customizable menus.” **

Interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing some Tizen televisions in January at CES. I have my doubts that Tizen TVs will be better than Android TVs - but time will tell. One thing that seems obvious is Samsung isn't likely to come out with a line of "Android TV" televisions anytime soon.
