The day has finally arrived that we can access root on our Sony Google TV's, thanks to GTV Hacker the Eagle = Blu-ray Player & Asura = Sony GoogleTV Panel are both exploitable and with a computer and 4 512mb USB sticks it's easily accomplished

    With root you get

    • Modified flash plugin with random per box flash string for Content Provider Bypass.
    • Crippled update feature to prevent box from receiving automatic updates.
    • Completely RW system, cache, and rootfs partitions
    • Full ADB Root
    • Removed signature checks on kernel / init scripts / init binary
    • A few other surprises.
    • BETA: Enable NTFS Support for Sony Google TV devices (see wiki for instructions on how to add: GTVHacker.com: Sony NTFS)
Personally I'll be knee deep with this today - hopefully we will see a Revue exploit in the near future

Visit the blog for instructions and be sure to follow @GtvHacker on twitter

Can someone confirm whether this thing actually now allows Hulu streaming? Vudu streaming perhaps?

I took the plunge after posting this and all is well, hulu via chrome browser does not work and for android users who are used to root with superuser this doesn't seem to be the same - unsigned kernels make for a better experience but I was hoping to be able to use some root apps like ad free and root explorer

So, Hulu doesnt work? Other people are posting it does. Have you found the other surprises? Curious what they are. I may be doing this root over the weekend once i get ahold of some USB drives.

Are you using the website or found a way to sideload the app?

Huh, I still get the "we see your trying to access hulu via your google tv" warning - I'm using chrome and going to hulu.com, is there something you're doing different ?

I did see something about setting user agent to Generic in a different thread for Hulu to work.

Yes you either need to switch to generic or put in a custom user agent string.

I had to change the user agent in chrome to "generic". Then out worked.

Once rooted can you uninstall apps that it came with like twitter or nba live ?

Oh yea what about installing different versions of chrome or flash etc... i hate the chrome interface built in to GTV.

I have no idea but if you used the gtvhacker update I think you are supposedly safe as I thought I read that it turns off the updates from sony.

I have not done much DOS & I am having trouble understanding how to do the following.
Do I use the dos command prompt or do I use the dd.exe prompt that comes up when I click on it in the tools directory.
    Either way I get nothing.

    Navigate into the Tools/ directory.
Plug USB drive #1 in and then enter the following command into the command line:

    dd.exe --list

Find the matching volume information for the inserted USB drive. This can be done easiest by matching the drive letter for the USB drive in "My Computer" to the corresponding "\\.\e:" (assuming the drive letter is e:). The format of the list should have the same syntax as the following:

    \\.\Volume{046ee4df-3db8-11e1-836e-000c29b70b00}\
    link to \\?\Device\Harddisk1\DP(1)0-0+11
    removeable media
    Mounted on \\.\e:
