Roku Breaks the $50 Barrier For Streaming

Washington, D.C. (October 11, 2011) -- Roku today announced that it's launching a new $49.99 streaming player that will display 720p HD video.

The player, called Roku LT, is $10 cheaper than the $59.99 Roku 2 HD, which also plays 720p HD video. However, the new set-top will not include Bluetooth or a micro SD card which enables you to play games with a Wii-like remote, writes CNET.com.

However, both products include built-in wireless, which allows you to connect the set-top to your home Internet network.

Roku's press release says the $49 player will work with "virtually any TV" and will include 300 "channels" including Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, Pandora, Crackle, Disney and HBO Go.

The new Roku will be available online at Roku.com and Amazon.com and at retail in early November, the company said.

"Our goal is a Roku in every home," said Roku Founder and CEO Anthony Wood. "The Roku LT opens up streaming to more people by lowering the cost of entry in these difficult economic times. With a $49 price and selection of more than 300 channels we expect the Roku LT will be everyone's favorite Holiday device."

To stay competitive with Roku and others, IMO Google needs to at least add Hulu Plus to GTV. And having a Crackle app that works properly would't hurt either.
