Report: Apple to Release 55-inch TV - Gear News at IGN
Will it be 720p like the Apple TV boxes?
The details seem pretty unlikely. A 55" OLED???
NO chance that the traditional TV makers would release tech like that to a new competitor like Apple. Until the likes of Matsushita, Samsung, and Sony are selling OLED at that size, I highly highly doubt it.
Also, it's not like Apple has IPTV figured out. AppleTV is useless unless you jailbreak it and run xbmc on it. The only possible advantage Apple has is the relationship with the studios.

A report issued by Global Equities Research's Trip Chowdhry claims that Apple is planning to launch 3 HDTV models in the mainstream market by March 2012. We've heard that Apple won't be releasing a new model of Apple TV, rather it intends on bringing HDTVs in the market.
He said his "converged view" of data from various developers is "probably" 75 percent accurate, and that it will "probably" be launched in March of 2012, with developer sessions at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June.It is being said that Apple will release 3 HDTV models which would cater to 3 different price points. It has also been said that these Apple HDTVs will come with 16 surround sound speakers in order to give complete surround sound experience.
However, this source should be dealt with skepticism as Chowdhry had claimed in 2010 that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer would speak at WWDC 2010, a claim which was denied by Microsoft and never came to pass. However, regardless of that we've been hearing chatter about possible Apple TV sets.
I'll update you more on this as we hear more.

Apple May Launch 3 HDTV Models By March 2012
AppleInsider | WSJ: Apple working on new video delivery technology for TVs
I love how people are so quick to make a blanket "useless" statement about a product like the Apple TV.
I have 2 and I get a lot of use out of both and I have yet to jailbreak either of them.
And on topic, this report about a 55" OLED TV from Apple is a rumor that just won't die. I can't see Apple doing a TV.

I have heard from a lot of sources that Apple is indeed making a TV....
Time will tell.. Maybe for the x-mas rush??
So Apple has figured out what Sony, LG, Vizio and all the other TV makers haven't? How to sell tons of premium TVs at high margins? That's the business that Apple is in, the high dollar, high margin business. Apple won't enter any high cost, low margin business. They won't. They don't have to.
The Apple TV is still nothing but a hobby, but it's a hobby that brings the Apple ecosystem to the living room. At $99 it makes sense for Apple and it makes sense for people invested in the Apple way. Unless or until an actual TV makes sense for Apple they won't do it. Right now, the TV business is a race to the bottom, there's no niche for Apple to carve out like the iPhone or the iPad did.
Do they have a TV set in development? Maybe. Probably. Along with a lot of other stuff that we'll never see or hear about.

This is indeed true..
That does make sense as well.
It sure is funny how much I've heard about it til the last few weeks though...
Like I said, time will tell....
Here's a new article that says the Apple TVs are likely to come to market in the 2012 holiday season. The article also mentions that smaller Apple TVs - such as a 15 inch and 19 inch could be coming: Rumor: Apple is Working on a Television for 2012 | Cleveland Leader
I wonder who actually in the works with Apple??
Maybe, Samsung, or Toshiba??
Here's another article that says Apple is more likely to opt for manufacturing smaller TVs (likely to be marketed by holiday season 2012)

Some interesting rumors about several features that the Apple TV will contain: t2zday
Wow, Apple TV rumors... they started three years ago and they still won't die.
I don't know about the whole thing..
I think Apple will go thru with this for some reason, I will say, it's just a gut feeling..
Again, ask yourself this one question: can Apple do what no other TV manufacturer has managed to accomplish? Sell a high dollar, high margin (50% or higher) device in massive quantity?
The answer is no, they can't. A small percentage of the Applejacks that line up for their iDevices would be willing to overpay for a TV. A far smaller percentage than Apple would need to meet their profit margin requirements.
Apple won't do a full blown TV. Just my gut feeling.

Who says Apple wants to sell ONLY the top $ devices??
I never said, or thought that at all..
I believe they will sell smaller units as in 27" like their iMacs, especially at first if and when they come out...
Here's an article that gives an opposing viewpoint - the author listing reasons why he feels an actual Apple TV set would have a difficult time being successful:
