Summary: TP Vision, trying to find a way to excite TV buyers, reveals three models at the IFA trade show that marry Google's smart-TV technology with lots of pixels.

    by Stephen Shankland - September 4, 2014

BERLIN -- Trying to stand out in a crowded market, TP Vision announced three models of Android-powered 4K TVs, the lower-end Philips 7900, the curved Philips 8900, and the high-end Philips 9100.

The products all have screens with 3,840x2,160 resolution -- aka 4K, Ultra HD, or UHD -- which is the main thrust of TV makers' efforts today to encourage flat-panel owners to spring for new models. They also support 3D TV -- which carried the upgrade banner without much success in exciting customers.

Philips now has 4K TVs "for everybody's taste and budget," said TP Vision Chief Commercial Officer Nico Vernieuwe at a press conference here at the IFA electronics show Thursday -- though the company didn't actually reveal pricing. The new models all go on sale this month in Europe and Russia.

4K resolution is common in the TV industry, if not people's homes, but less common today is support for Google's Android operating system. The three Philips models run Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Key Features: 55-inch LCD TV with edge LED lighting; Android TV built in; Curved Screen Design; Three-sided Ambilight
    Manufacturer: Philips

First Impressions: Philips Joins In The Curved TV Experiment
Having once been the exclusive domain of LG and Samsung, curved TVs now form part of almost every TV brand’s offering at this year’s IFA technology show, and Philips is no exception. Though actually the fact that the 55PUS8909C’s 55-inch screen is curved is just the start of its attractions, as it also sports a native 4K/UHD resolution, and even more intriguingly, a smart system powered by Android.
