I have my DirecTV box connected to the NSZ-GT1 vis HDMI. I also have HDMI connected from NSZ-GT1 to my HDTV. Currently, I can watch TV when the NSZ-GT1 is powered on. However, if it is turned off, the satellite HDMI signal does not make it way to the TV.

Is there a setting that I need to change so I can watch satellite without turning on the NSZ-GT1?

No, actually, Google TV doesn't "pass through" the HDMI signal, it relays the signal after processing it. That's why it needs to by powered on to facilitate it.

I used an HDMI splitter from Monoprice to accomplish what you want to do. I split the signal from the cable box, one to the GTV and the other to an HDMI input on the TV. The product description is "1X2 Mini HDMI Splitter w/ 3D support" it's 23.49. I've been using it for a couple of days now, no problems.
