Google TV: Now faster and easier

Last year, your Google TV received an update which added Google Play and simplified the entertainment discovery experience. Our next update makes finding whatever you want on Google TV even faster and easier. The update starts to roll out this week to LG devices and to other devices thereafter.

Voice Search: Simply speak to watch anything

Instantly access the power of Google TV, simply by using your voice. Just speak to watch TV shows and movies, start playing a YouTube video, open applications, go to websites, do a Google search, and much more. Say "CNN" to go right to the channel, or say "Homeland" to see all the live and streaming options to watch the show. You can even say "how to tie a bow tie" to watch an instructional YouTube video. Try "search movies with Jeff Bridges" and see results in our new, more visual search results page.

PrimeTime: A guide that works for you

Last year your Google TV added the TV & Movies app to help you browse 100,000+ movies and TV episodes available to watch. Now called PrimeTime, the app makes it even easier to find your favorite content. Easily access PrimeTime anywhere in Google TV and browse for something new while you watch. You can quickly flip through the best stuff on live TV, access your favorite channels, see TV shows you recently watched, and find other suggestions based on what you enjoy watching. Here's how both of these features work:

YouTube: Making it easier to watch on Google TV

The world watches 4 billion hours of YouTube per month, but it's not yet as easy to watch YouTube on your TV as it is on your computers, phones, and tablets. YouTube and Google TV are changing that. With the updated YouTube app for Android and Google TV, your devices automatically pair so you can play any YouTube video from your Android phone or tablet on your TV with just one button. What's playing on your mobile device looks even better on your Google TV.

Look for all these updates first on LG devices with Google TV over the coming weeks, and to other second generation hardware with Google TV in the coming months. First generation devices will see the updates to PrimeTime and YouTube. For more information, check out our updated Google TV overview.

Google: Seriously, we've improved Google TV | Internet & Media - CNET News (click for full article)

Two years into the television project, Google execs say the oft-criticized product is progressing rapidly. An update today brings voice search and new PrimeTime guide.

"MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- The Google TV sitting in this user experience lab can access years worth of programming. In addition to everything on cable, it connects to the libraries of Netflix, YouTube, and 100,000 movies and television shows available on Google Play."Great -- you have all this content," says Rishi Chandra, director of product management for Google TV. "Now, how do you find a way to watch it?"

Usability has been the primary question about Google TV since it launched in 2010. Early reviewers found Google's first take on connected TV to be frustrating, and an update last year met with similar disdain. Confusing dialogue boxes, cryptic error messages, controllers with dozens of buttons -- there was plenty there to criticize.

Mario Queiroz, who runs Google TV, often tells employees that in the television business, you have to have a thick skin. The original device was so simple to use -- just press the power button and start watching -- that any connected television was bound to seem complicated by comparison.

And so, in characteristic Google fashion, engineers have continued to iterate on a platform they view as essential to the company's strategy of maintaining a strong presence on every connected screen in a person's life. While employees say they still see plenty of room for improvement, they also say Google TV is making rapid progress.

Today the company is rolling out an updated version of Google TV designed to make the product more useful in three ways: powerful voice search, a redesigned on-screen guide, and improved sharing from mobile devices to the big screen. The features will come first to LG televisions, and to other second-generation Google TV products "in the coming months," Google said. First-generation Google TV products will get the redesigned guide and easier YouTube sharing only."

    Google TV Voice Search Demo:

"During Google I/O this summer the Google TV team promised more features were on the way -- the upgraded Google Play app just arrived -- and now it's posted a "sneak peek" video that shows us a few.

As promised, there's second screen integration allowing users to browse live TV and streaming content on the app, then choose it so it starts playing on the TV.

Much of the demo is focused on the big improvements it says it's made to search, with voice search that works across TV and the internet to quickly pull up specific content, content by genre or perform specific tasks like tuning in a particular channel or website like Google Maps.

There's also a new mini-guide overlay based on its personalized TV & Movies app so you can get an idea of what else is on without jumping completely away from what you were watching. Getting cheaper hardware available from more manufacturers is just one part of the puzzle, we'll see if these improvements make Google TV a desired intermediary between broadcast television and internet streaming."
