More Chromecast apps on the way: Google hosting hackathon in December - Liliputing (click for full article)

-- Google's Chromecast is a tiny, inexpensive device that lets you stream internet audio video to your TV. As of late November, 2013 that means you can stream media from a very small group of sites including Netflix, YouTube, Pandora, Hulu Plus, and HBO Go.

But soon you may be able to do a lot more with Google's $35 Chromecast device. Google is inviting developers to Mountain View to participate in a hackathon December 7th and 8th in advance of the launch of the Google Cast SDK.

In other words, get ready for a rush of third-party Chromecast apps.

I think the new apps for Chromecast will be great - however the problem as I see it - is that until Google adds Chromecast support to GTV - the improved Chromecast dongle will detract from GTV sales. Even if Google adds Chromecast support for GTV - I think as more apps are added to Chromecast - for only $35 a pop the Chromecast will still draw sales away from Google TV.

And then there is the problem of Chromecast competing with GTV for the attention of app developers. Chromecast sells better than GTV and IMO over a short period of time will have more optimized apps than GTV. Already HBOGO works on Chromecast but not GTV. Chromcast also already has Hulu Plus - something that GTV hasn't been able to achieve. Hoping this doesn't become a trend - but IMO the threat is very real.

It was obvious the day CC hit the market :)

With Chromecast progress…. Lets assume Google comes with a “Android TV” box that offers everything, everyone wishes for …. (within couple of years) which device will sell tens of million of units? “Android TV” or “Chromecast”?

It's been my view that Chromecast will help GoogleTV. Sort of like the VCR, which, instead of taking customers away from live theater, it created an increased interest in movies in general. One creates an interest in the other, both Chromecast and GoogleTV are Google products and it seems to me that if developers produce apps for Chromecast, why not GoogleTV; which will be so easy to do with the Jelly Bean update. For example, I'm pretty sure that at the Google Hackathon for Chromecast apps developers, Google surely will also push for optimal for GoogleTV apps added to the play store.
