Is Google working on a new console or just a YouTube app for all consoles?

A job posting sprang up on LinkedIn today listed by Google for a position titled Game Console Software Engineer, YouTube. At first it may appear that Google wants to launch its own next-gen game console when they say“you’ll be working as a Software Engineer developing the next generation game console. Don’t get me wrong, it would be awesome to see Google launch a new console.

However, if you read further down in the responsibilities section it lists “Build[ing] the next generation game-console-based TV experience with You Tube video content,” which seems to be more of a YouTube app for the current and upcoming next-gen consoles. Under the requirements section it asks for “deep technical knowledge of Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 and/or Nintendo Wii”which means that the app will be available for all consoles.

Hopefully with E3 coming up soon, one of the three console makers or Google will have an official announcement on this upcoming feature. If the PS3 and Xbox 360 are supposed to be complete home entertainment centers it only makes sense for them to finally have YouTube available on them.
