    -- Intel’s 5th-gen Core “Broadwell” chips are just starting to arrive, and we won’t see most of the new chips from this family until early 2015. But Intel says it’s already working on its 6th-gen Core chips and that members of the “Skylake” family should launch in the second half of 2015.

    At the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, Intel showed off a few prototypes of computers powered by the upcoming chips.

    One model was a desktop PC handling 4K video playback, while the other was a 2-in-1 notebook.

    Intel isn’t ready to say much about the Skylake processors, but we know that Skylake will be a “tock” in Intel’s Tick-Tock schedule. That means they’ll feature a new architecture designed to boost performance while reducing power consumption, but they’ll be based on the same 14nm process technology as Broadwell chips.

    -- Intel’s first Broadwell chip is ready to go and the first laptops, tablets, and 2-in-1s featuring the new processor should hit the streets soon.

    The Intel Core M processor is a 4.5 watt chip that has the kind of power consumption (and efficiency) you’d expect from a cheap Intel Atom processor. But early benchmark tests suggest this little chip is a beast: It seems to outperform Core i3 and Core i5 Haswell chips that use 3 times as much power in at least some tests.

    That’s good news if you’ve been hoping for higher-performance portable devices. But it means that if you’re looking for cheap devices, you’ll probably be better off buying a system with an Intel Bay Trail chip for now.

    -- After Intel launched its low-power, low-cost Atom processors in 2008 the chip family sort of stagnated for a while. There wasn’t really that much difference between an Atom chip from 2009 and one from 2011 in terms of performance. Things changed with the introduction of Intel’s Bay Trail architecture in 2013.

    Low-cost notebooks and tablets with Atom, Celeron, and Pentium chips based on Bay Trail technology offer long battery life and surprisingly capable performance.

    Next year things could get even better with the introduction of Cherry Trail.

    -- Intel’s new Core M processor is a low-power, high-performance chip aimed at thin, light and fanless computers including notebooks, tablets, and 2-in-1 systems.

    At least 8 portable computers with Intel Core M chips are on the way this year, and early benchmarks suggest the little tablets and notebooks won’t use a lot of power, but they’ll offer pretty strong performance.

    But what does it take to build a thin, light, and fanless system? Intel provided some guidelines at a session during this week’s Intel Developer Forum.
