So I understand that the costar needs 1.4 cables. But what if my Onkyo receiver which Is between my costar and tv is 1.1? Would this explain why sometimes I get no video signal?

The only definitive answer regarding the cable can come from trying an HDMI 1.4 cable which are very inexpensive now. Other possible causes, does the TV accept all resolutions and does the Onkyo receiver pass through all resolutions? Setting the Co-Star to output everything at 1080i, assuming your display accepts a 1080i signal and as far as I know, all HD displays do accept 1080i, and trying the programming that hadn't played previously might help. Without knowing display model and Onkyo AV Receiver model, probably all we can do is guess.
