Google wants to take on Apple with an open AirPlay alternative — Online Video News (click for full article)

    BY Janko Roettgers 11/19/12

"Google is working on an open alternative to Apple's AirPlay, and it's hoping to bring a number of device and software vendors on board to provide the industry with an open technology to exchange data between second screens and TV-connected devices.

YouTube unveiled the first implementation of this technology last week, when it launched AirPlay-like video beaming from Android phones and tablets to Google TV devices. But Google product manager Timbo Drayson made it clear during a conversation I had with him a few days ago that this is just the first step. "We really want to move the whole industry forward," he said."

"Google is reportedly working on an open alternative to the AirPlay functionality in Apple TV as the next phase opens in the battle for the living room between the search giant and Apple and Microsoft. Google is hoping to convince a variety of device and software makers to support the new open AirPlay initiative, according to GigaOm. It's not clear if the search giant is hoping to create a consortium for its open AirPlay plans similar to the Open Handset Alliance, which supports the development and distribution of Android devices."

Google Needs an AirPlay Competitor, Whether It's Building One or Not | TIME.com (click for full article)

By Jared Newman Nov. 20, 2012

"When Google announced an update to Google TV last week, it was hard not to imagine something bigger: a full-blown competitor to Apple's AirPlay.

AirPlay allows iPhone, iPad or Mac users to beam audio and video to a television using an Apple TV box. So if you're watching a video through Hulu Plus on an iPad, or looking through the camera roll on an iPhone, you can play that content on the big screen with the press of a button. The key is that there's no setup process. You just press the AirPlay button, and it works."
