"Google today expanded its Google Play lineup, adding the ability to purchase movies and TV shows, as well as magazines.
Google has teamed up with publishers like Condé Nast, Hearst, and Meredith to offer magazines like House Beautiful, Men's Health, Shape and Wired, much like Apple's Newsstand.

The search giant is also adding movie purchases to Google Play. Until now, users could only rent them. For those who want to catch up on their favorite TV show, meanwhile, the Google store will include "thousands" of episodes from broadcast and cable TV shows like Revenge, Parks & Recreation, and Breaking Bad from ABC Studios, NBCUniversal, and Sony Pictures, and more.

"You can play back movies and TV shows on all your Android devices, through Google Play on the web, and on YouTube, and soon we'll bring the experience to Google TV devices," Google said.

Movie purchases, TV shows and magazines are available today on play.google.com, and will roll out to Google Play on devices in the coming days.

In April, Google announced a partnership with Paramount Pictures that made hundreds of movies available for rent on Google Play and YouTube.

As part of its Google I/O developer conference, Google revealed today that it now has 600,000 apps available via Google Play, which have been downloaded more than 20 billion times. To help access all that Google Play content, the company also unveiled the Nexus Q streaming media player."

    (MoneyWatch) COMMENTARY

"If there is one thing that Google (GOOG) has been fairly bad at, it has been negotiating with some major and important potential business partners. There was the blow-up with publishers over scanning books into an electronic form for searching. Some of the biggest TV networks blocked Google TV from seeing their content.

If there was one area where Google has been incredibly uneven, it has been in negotiating with those it needed from the media world. That's been a problem for the search giant. Many of the areas in which it has business interests depend heavily on access to content of all sorts, including movies, music, and publishing. But that time is apparently over as Google's Play Store will sell movies and TV shows, as well as magazines. If Google can make headway on this front, it could cause a good deal more trouble for Apple (AAPL) and Amazon (AMZN)."
