I want to play streaming video from sites where it requires a Window Media Plugin.

No. Might be possible when the app market opens up.

Thanks. In your opinion, is there likelihood of that happening this year?

Google TV App Market got pushed back to later this Summer. Check back after the App Market opens. You'll know when to check back because your Google TV will look TOTALLY different when it gets the Honeycomb 3.1 update that will enable the App Market.

    Thanks.

Will it be a software/firmware update only or hardware change also?

Will current Sony Google TV work with the new apps including Windows Media Player plugin?

Support for future Google TV software released is expected to be supported on current and next generation hardware. Have a look at some of the great news articles in the GTV News section here. Tons of info on what's to come and when. For now - put your swim suit on and go play outside for a while cause as others have said - the update has been pushed back to 'sometime' this summer.

@Anwar: Late summer - there won't be anything new until the new update is released - a total makeover of the GTV OS. I'm thinking September at best.

Same opinion here. GTV is lacking support.

Honestly, I don't think it will ever happen. The Chrome browser built-in to the Google TV doesn't accept plug-ins or extensions of any kind. Which website(s) are you trying to stream from by the way? It is possible that those sites have an alternate page for clients that do not depend on Microsoft products.
