Something's changed with GTV the past few days regarding viewing PDF's. I used to read PDF's via the Docs Viewer app. Now, when I download something, I get the message "Whoops, can't view that in Google Drive. If you want to view it, download this Lumin PDF Viewer". I'm not sure that I want to use that app. Why can't I use the Docs Viewer app?

Edit: The subject line should say Lumin File Viewer, not Lumin File.

The "Repligo Reader" app is excellent for reading PDF.

I have it and use all the time. No idea why it doesn't show up in the Play Store.

    "Incompatible" means it won't work.

Catfish Rivers, I and many others have been using the quite-serviceable, free Docs Viewer PDF reader app with GTV since before you joined this forum. The PDF app you are recommending is NOT free. We only deal in "free" on these boards. O.K.? :)

It looks like the Docs Viewer app had a new update on November 14th, and now it only supports Android 4.0 or higher.

The information I have is that a DCMA complaint was lodged against Docs Viewer. I tried downloading the .apk from three different websites. The first two times it couldn't parse. The third time, the downloaded app didn't say docs viewer. It said Eggapps World (?) instead, so I didn't install it.

Even if there is now a version that only works with Android 4,0, there are still earlier versions that exist that will work with GTV. No? I haven't found a better PDF viewer app than this one. I haven't tried any paid ones. I'm sure they work O.K. But only O.K., and no better.

You mean you do. Not everyone is a cheapo, and don't mind a $2.99 app for the quality.

Yeah, and not everyone can afford to live in Boston either. Or the northeastern United States, for that matter.

    P.S. - I was born in Boston.

I wrote to Docs Viewer. Their reply was:

This week, Google changed the API we were using to preview documents on Android without much notice.

Our priority is/was to fix the app for the majority of our users (90%), which means Android 4+ with touchscreen devices. Even for those users, some important features are still broken, and some file types are no longer supported.

We still have one more update coming for those users, before we can try updating the app for other devices.

In the meantime, could you try this link on your Google TV and tell me if you can view the document and interact with it?

I couldn't open the link. I got the Ooops
message suggesting I try the Lumin PDF Viewer or DocHub - Sign & Edit PDF's apps. Instead, the link opened with the inferior Office Documents app that I had installed yesterday as a stopgap solution for reading PDF's.

I've come across a decent-to-good replacement for the Docs Viewer app. It's called qPDF Viewer and you need to side-load it. It's free. qPDF Viewer - PDF Reader Android App
The only thing that I find unsettling, as it's a distraction, is that there is a constant overlay (page number, left/right arrows) as you scroll down. You can minimize it, so that it's visible for only about a second every time you press the down/up button on your keyboard. You can do that by pressing a faint image on the right side of the screen. The image is of left/right/up/down arrows. A very nice rendering of PDF's, all things considered.

I deleted the Office Documents Viewer app as the qPDF app is much better. I downloaded and deleted about six other popular pdf viewer apps as they wouldn't open.

Good find, the qPDF app seems to work fine. Thanks.
