I started this so that the rooting progress and updates would have a proper home. Hopefully, user "Wisdom" will see this and post his updates here. I am very interested in seeing where being able to root the Co-Star takes this device.
I am not a developer but I do know how to follow instructions (I have rooted 3 different android tablets) and have been known to buy a beer or 2 or 4 or 8 or 20 for a successful "root". Wouldn't it be nice to move this to ICS or Jelly Bean, it has the hardware I think.
I couldn't root my way out of a wet paper bag but I will follow the progress of rooting this device. I do agree that the topic needs its own thread, it won't be for everybody. I can say we have had some claims in the past of being able to root the first generation boxes but nothing useful developed as far as I know.
Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure all Wisdom did was sideload some root-only apps, such as Root Explorer. These apps can be installed on any device (rooted or not), but they won't function correctly without the device actually being rooted. For example, I installed AdFree Android on my stock Costar without problem, but it doesn't actually do anything because the app requires root. I have yet to hear of any developers leading the charge for getting root on the Costar, but hopefully someone will pick up the torch soon!
Cj_000, good news, where is the Vizio Co-Star root software package with instructions, thanks in advance ...?
Fantastic news! Do you have a stable persistent root? I know getting root privileges to stick after a reboot can be challenging itself!
What would the main application be for rooting this thing? Putting Jelly Bean on it? Would that make it perform better?
