Google, change that channel: clever hack brings Google TV controls to Google Now ? Tech News and Analysis (click for full article)

    by Janko Roetgers - July 23, 2013

Summary: Local weather, your commute ... and the apps running on your TV? Google Now just gained the ability to control Google TVs, thanks to a clever hack.

-- "This is neat: Independent Google TV developer Leon Nicholls has managed to control his Google TV device with voice commands straight from Google Now. It's a bit of a hack, and the setup process is still a bit complicated, but it definitely shows where things are going for Google Now in terms of TV integration.

Check out a demo video shot by Nicholls below:

Nicholls used the Tasker app, as well as a number of other apps and plugins to turn Google TV tasks like the launch of the Netflix app or the changing of the TV channel into Google Now voice commands. That's a bit tedious, and probably not something every Google TV user is prepared to do.

However, I wouldn't be too surprised to see similar functionality pop up in Google Now at some point, possibly even with the ability to control a lot more devices: Google and its YouTube team have been working with Netflix and others on establishing a common protocol to launch apps and services on compatible devices.

DIAL, as the protocol is called, is being supported by an increasing number of TV manufacturers, which could mean that Google Now could eventually be used to control a wide variety of devices, much in the same way as demonstrated by Nicholls now, but without the need to do any kind of complicated setup."

Here are the instructions that Leon Nichols posted in the description of his YouTube video:

*** To try this yourself, install these apps on your Android mobile device:1. Tasker (paid): http://goo.gl/pSGQHX
    2. Tasker App Factory (free): http://goo.gl/DgbXQ
    3. GTV Tasker Plugin (free): http://goo.gl/5fTCRP

You need to install the following app on your Google TV device:
    1. GTV Tasker Apps (free): http://goo.gl/B1RCWN

I wrote both the GTV Tasker Plugin and GTV Tasker Apps, but I don't have any relationship with the Tasker developers.

For each Google TV command that you want to invoke from Google Now, do these steps:
    1. Create a Tasker task, by following these instructions: Tasker: App Creation
    2. Assign a "GTV Tasker" action to that task, by following these instructions: http://goo.gl/Bzjrgk
    3. Export the task as an app.

It is very important that right after you create a new task, to give that task an icon otherwise you will get errors later when you create an app from that task.

If you want to launch apps on your Google TV device, run "GTV Tasker Apps" on your Google TV device to get the data needed for the GTV Tasker Plugin to invoke an app.

Since you will be using the app name for the Google Now commands, pick a unique prefix for the task name so it can be automatically selected by Google Now.
I've used "TV" as a prefix, for example "TV Home" and "TV Netflix". Then in Google Now, you say either "open" or "open app" and then your app name, for example "open tv home".

Although this demo controls Google TV devices, this technique could also be used to control other devices and invoke web services.
So you can use this to add your own custom commands to Google Now. ***
